The Tornado is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is a two-seated, souped-up vintage-style biplane employed by the Freedom Fighters. It is typically piloted by Miles "Tails" Prower and others are usually standing/seated on its wings. The plane is owned by Sonic the Hedgehog himself, and as such, he has also been known to pilot it at times.

Description[]

Appearance[]

ClassicTornado

The Tornado, from Sonic the Hedgehog #289.

The Tornado is an old vintage biplane with a red fuselage and two gray, red-tipped main wings attached with a pair of poles on both sides, though the wings were previously tipped gray as well. The red fuselage has a power plant with a yellow tractor screw and the word "SONIC" written in white on both sides with stretchy F-letter labels underlining them. The cockpit has only one seat. Its empennage has two small horizontal stabilizers and one vertical stabilizer, the latter having a white stripe emblazoned with an emblem of a Bumper and the formers having a yellow stripe. It also has three collapsible wheels, two under the lower main wing and one below the empennage, and a custom jet engine on the bottom.

Features and abilities[]

The Tornado is highly maneuverable and, with its jet engine, is able to fly at impressive speeds. It is also equipped with two machine guns.[1]

History[]

Early usage[]

The earliest known utilization of the Tornado was during the time Dr. Eggman was strip-mining South Island of its resources. Sonic the Hedgehog flew the Tornado over to the island to deal with the evil scientist and then after defeating the latter, he flew back to Knothole Village on Westside Island.[2] Eggman then planned to launch the Death Egg for the first time. Piloted by Miles "Tails" Prower, he and Sonic used the plane to chase after Eggman as the Death Egg launched into space.[3] The duo later used the Tornado to travel to the newly discovered Angel Island, and as air support when Eggman once again attempted to launch the Death Egg.[4][5]

Shattered World Crisis[]

Note: From the readers point of view, this picks up from where the Tornado's original timeline ended.

Following the dawn of the Shattered World Crisis, the Tornado was employed by the Freedom Fighters for a rescue mission of Uncle Chuck and Professor Dillon Pickle. With Tails behind its controls, the Tornado had to face some aerial Badniks before the team could rescue the professors.[1][6] Tails, Sally Acorn and Big the Cat later took the Tornado for a trip to Dr. Ellidy's at Isolated Island.[7][8]
