Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. The game begins with Sonic running through a desert when he spots a meteor coming into the atmosphere and crash nearby. He goes over to inspect the crater but finds it is not a meteor at all, but is really a pod. The next moment, an orange, anthropomorphic female hedgehog spindashes out of the pod and faints into Sonic's arms. When she awakens, she has no memory of events prior to their meeting, and Sonic decides to help her recover her memory.

The Name

Along the way, they come up with a few nicknames for her in order to decide what to call her. When they come across a beach, Sonic tells her that if she puts her ear to a seashell, she can hear the sounds of the ocean. She puts it to her ear, only to be pinched on the nose by a hermit crab inside the shell. Sonic decides to name her Shelly, due to the event. The next moment, Amy Rose appears and jumps on Sonic. Shelly and Amy quickly get into a fight ^[1] and the emerald gets sent flying into the air. Dr. Eggman then appears and takes the emerald, also capturing Amy. He tells Sonic to gather the emeralds and bring them to him in three days if they ever want to see Amy again. At first, Shelly is reluctant rescue Amy, but Sonic persuades her into it; The two then set out to find the emeralds and rescue their (well, at least Sonic's) friend.

Shelly vs. Shadow

At Pine River, Shelly and Sonic get separated, where Shelly meets Shadow the Hedgehog, who shows attitude towards her and they get into a fight. The next moment, they hear fighting sounds nearby and spot Sonic fighting Dr. Eggman, who claims he knew Shelly before Sonic did, after being defeated. A confused Shelly is determinded to follow him, but is stopped by Sonic, who advises her to "leave that battle for another day".

Anger Issues

When they reach the top of the hill at Winter Plateau, The two get into an argument, causing Shelly to lose control of her temper and jump on Sonic, causing them both to roll down the hill to a ledge. Shelly decides to go off on her own, but slips down to the bottom of the hill. Then she and Sonic both race to the emerald in a cave. They both reach it at the same time, and wind up fighting each other for it. Sonic wins, but still shows kindness towards Shelly. Though, Shelly did not accept his pity, she backs up and discovers a switch, revealing a mysterious area behind the cave!

The Truth

After racing each other to the emerald back in the cave they had settled in, they discover Dr. Eggman had kept two of the emeralds to himself and was intending to keep Amy Rose hostage and still get all the emeralds. He then reveals the story of Shelly's past - Dr. Eggman used Prof. Gerald Robotnik's journal to learn of how to artificially create life forms. In a previous battle with Sonic, he got one of Sonic's quills, and when he had captured Amy Rose, got one of hers as well. He used their DNA to create E-16 Sigma (or Shelly the Hedgehog). But, because she had took on her own attitude (Sonic's dislike of Eggman) she went wild and nearly destroyed his base, so he had to hit her on the head hard enough to give her amnesia, put her in the pod, and launched her out of her base. Shelly, at this news, nearly faints. Dr. Eggman threatens to hurt Amy unless they give him the emeralds. Instead, Shelly decides to trade Amy for herself, though Eggman still takes the emeralds Sonic collected and fless to the center of his base.

The Final Battle

Sonic, Shadow and Amy go after him, and he unleashes another of his creations: Ultimo - a hedgehog resembling Super Sonic. It absorbs the emeralds, but turns on his master, and splits a hole into the ground, revealing that they were not in a mountain -- but a volcano the entire time. Sonic tries to stop him, but is seriously injured. As he grabs Sonic and pulls him down with him into the volcano, Shelly and Amy mourn, while Eggman rejoices. Shelly, enraged, confronts Eggman and tells him Sonic was the only person she would ever trust since they met, and he was her best friend. As she finishes speaking, she finds Super Sonic behind her, and apologizes for her behavior. Sonic accpets and goes to fight Ultimo, who merges with the lava and becomes a lava beast ("Lava Menace"). He defeats it, and rescues everyone from the errupting volcano. Dr. Eggman boards his Egg Mobile with the emeralds and tries to escape, but Sonic throws a rock at him and his Egg Mobile explodes, with Eggman parachuting out.

Epilogue

In the end, Shelly decides to guard Space Colony ARK so Eggman and G.U.N. never ruin it again. She bids Sonic and the others a fond farewell, and teleports to the ARK. The game ends with Sonic returning to the desert he met his new friend, reminiscing their adventure.

Originally, after the threat of the Blue Blur, Slash suggested he created a cyborg from Sonic's DNA. When Eggman was ready to launch the progam, Slash convinced him to take DNA from a female hedgehog, so Slash could have a Queen to rule with on Moebius. This took many years to do, and Sonic found out about the plot and tried to stop him. Chaos Control occurred and sent them all to Earth. This separated the capsule Shelly was in and, ironically, she would be found by Sonic. Slash wasn't near the sight when Chaos Control ocurred and remained on Moebius. When he woke up in Blade's hideout he ran off in search of his queen.

Gameplay

The Sonic Hunt gameplay is similar to Sonic Heroes, though there are only two characters and one team before you find Shadow and Amy. The game mainly focuses on teamwork, with unlockable moves such as "The 360" (Sonic picks up Shelly and she kicks surrounding enemies) and Lift Off (Shelly lifting Sonic into the air and he uses Blue Tornado on nearby enemies). In some boss battles, there is only one character fighting (Example: Pine River = Shelly vs. Shadow/ Sonic vs. Eggman) In the levels, only Sonic is controllable until you use a Team Blast, then afterwards Shelly will appear on the screen and will continue to follow Sonic until the end of the level. During this time, if you plugged a 2-player controller into your PS2/Wii/XBOX 360, Shelly is controllable and can perform Homing Attack and gather rings for Sonic. Other characters can be unlocked in 2-player mode, including Silver the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower and Knuckles the Echidna.

Multiplayer Mode

In Multiplayer Mode, you start out with only two playable teams. The more emblems you collect, the more characters you unlock.

The game consists of 11 levels:

Sand Ocean - The first level where the two protagonists meet

Sunnyside Park - The beach Dr. Eggman appears

Emerald Valley - Flower-covered hills where our heroes find the first Chaos Emerald

Amazon Bridge - The jungle where the team must find the second emerald

Pine River - a forest hiding the third chaos emerald, and also where Shelly meets Shadow the Hedgehog

Winter Plateau - The hills where the team separates, but find the fourth emerald

Blizzard Glide - Sonic must snowboard down the mountain to Shelly

Climate Climb - Shelly must climb up the mountain to reach the fifth emerald in a cave

Industrial Path - Dr. Eggman's base hidden inside the mountain, containing the sixth emerald

Sabotage - Shelly's runs to the core of her first home in an attempt to destroy it

Rescue Mission - The seventh emerald has been hidden in the final battle

Character

Appearance

Originally, Shelly was an orange, anthropomorphic. 14-year-old hedgehog. She had a cyan headband and two quills -- one in the back of her head and one covering her right eye. She wore a white shirt with a cyan #16 (dark blue sleeves) and cyan pants with white streaks. Shelly, like Shadow, has two ring-like bracelets, and her shoes are cyan with white accents. Her eyes are light brown and she has a noticeably rounder nose than the other characters. She stands at 100 cm (3 ft.) tall and weighs 77 lbs.

A poll was created for fans to vote on what Shelly's new design would be for Sonic Hunt 2 and the following games. "Keep her original look" won the most votes, and Shelly received a more teenage look. She now wears periwinkle shoes with white accents, blue jeans, and has a white jacket with 16 on it. Her front hair now covers her left eye instead of her right, and now wears a periwinkle headband. It is revealed at the ending cutscene of Sonic Hunt 2 that Shelly keeps in her pocket a seashell necklace, which she obtained in Sonic Hunt the day she met Sonic.

Personality

Shelly is a cheery, optimistic, independent girl with a short temper. Shelly is often the comedy relief, so she tends to be bumbling at times and occasionally wander off^[4]. In the early parts of Sonic Hunt, she had thought all people were friendly like Sonic, up until she met Shadow the Hedgehog, and wound up battling him. Shelly is often apt to get into a fight. Recently, her temper has been toned down a bit, but is still present. She is more of a tomboy in the series, being told constantly by most of the people who encounter her to show a more "feminine" side, with no luck. She, like Sonic, loves Chili Dogs and once got in a fight with him over one. On the other hand, when she is not acting like a pig, a slob, or just main "male", she is a responsible leader of her team, and will show grand amounts of both skill and brains.

Shelly, like most characters, can perform a spindash and Homing Attack. When she battled Shadow, she learned Chaos Control. After she learned the power of teamwork, she could perform two new moves with Sonic: the Spin Kick and the Lift Off. With Skyler and Lightning's help, Team ARK can perform their team blast, Chaotic Storm. Sklyer throws Lightning in the air, Lightning blasts Shelly out of the cannon in his arm, and Shelly performs a Chaos Blast that destroys below targets. It is revealed in Jezz of Time that Shelly has a super form, which was obtained through Perfect Jezz. She has a red aura surrounding her and her abilities multiply.

Relationships

Sonic the Hedgehog

Shelly's first friend, whom he met while on a run in the desert. Shelly seems to always care about Sonic's safety, and will prevent anything from happening to him (As seen in Sonic Hunt 2, when Skyler realized Sonic was the Blue Blur he was always dreaming about, almost charged at him but Shelly held him back) Shelly looks up to Sonic and treats him like a father.

Skyler the Wasp

Shelly shows special concern for Sklyer, so much as to leave the ARK to help him recover his memories. Skyler appears to be what Shadow is to Rouge. The two are have been best friends since their meeting, and have looked out for each other.

Lightning the Hedgehog

Ever since their meeting, Lightning has had a crush on Shelly, though she is very aware of this. Shelly will often worry about Lightning from time to time, or whenever he is in danger of being hurt. Lightning seems to have gotten over his crush, and pays more attention to Hope.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Shadow is Shelly's de facto rival, who often teases her by calling her a monkey (with the famous retort "I'M NOT A MONKEY!") Shelly does not like Shadow for his attitude towards her and everyone else. Shelly, in Sonic Hunt, said he "wasn't so bad", but she may have changed her mind since then. The two often spar, and to this day mock each other whatever chance they get. Though, Shelly and Shadow must show respect for each other to some degree, seeing as they both save each other at least once (Shadow in Sonic Hunt 2, Shelly in Sonic Paradox). They seem to share the same relationship Knuckles and Rouge do. There may be a hidden friendship between the two, for Shelly even helps Shadow when he is injured in Shadow the Hedgehog 2. The two have been shown to have romantic relationships in both Sonic Quest and Sonic Paradox. In Sonic Quest, even though the two have amnesia, and cannot remember their rivalry, the two are very close friends (at least for a limited time before clobbering each other). This proves that if they had met under different conditions, they may have become allies.

Dawn the Hedgehog

Shelly met Dawn after helping her out of a cryo tube that launched and crashed into Central City. According to Shelly, she can sense when other APTs (artificially-proccessed transgenetic hedgehogs) are nearby so she knew it was safe. Shelly became good friends with Dawn over the course of the adventure.

Amy Rose

When Shelly first met Amy, they instantly disliked each other. But during the events of Sonic Hunt, they became good friends.

Hope the Hedgehog

Shelly and Hope must have a strong relationship, seeing as Shelly trusted her enough to let her guard the ARK.

Jezz the Hedgehog

Jezz had first seen Shelly while looking into Sonic's past, and recognized her as a hedgehog he saw only in his dreams. He made it his mission to find a way to get to the ARK, and rounded up Team Emerald, then set out for the ARK in Sonic Heroes 2. When the team meets Team ARK, Team Fate arrives at the same time, and their flight type (Spike) hits on Shelly, angering Jezz. After Shelly stops the fight and the events of Sonic Heroes 2 come to pass, Shelly and Jezz become good friends. During Jezz of Time, Jezz and Shelly begin to develop a romance, and in the end both fall in love.

In the third installment of the Jezz of Time series, which takes place 20 years in the future, the two are married with two children.

Spike Renzar

Since Sonic Heroes 2, Spike has been smitten with Shelly, with Shelly's usual rebuttal "Not even in your dreams, Renzar!!" Despite the fact he knows that she and Jezz are dating, he continuously firts with Shelly. A running gag is that whenever Spike flirts with Shelly, she slaps him with a fly swatter and says the line "Not even in your dreams, Renzar!" Apparently she can make her swatter disappear just like Amy can with her hammer.

Dr. Eggman

Dr. Eggman was Shelly's creator, using Sonic (& Amy's) DNA. He educated her and treated her like she was his own, but he was also training her to destroy Sonic. However, Shelly had lost self-control and started destroying Eggman's base. In order to stop her, Eggman struck her on the head, thus, giving her amnesia. He then launched her out of a cryo tube down to Earth, no longer caring what would become of her. As of Jezz of Time 2, Eggman tried to gain Shelly's trust by reminding her of her childhood. At first, Shelly does not believe him at all, but after a while, she starts to wonder who she used to be, and who her family really is -- Sonic or Eggman?

Slash The Wolf

Shelly is disgusted by Slash. She finds him repulsive because he is always saying she is his queen. These two have met on a few occasions and they always ended with Shelly smacking Slash for licking her hand. Ironically, if not for Slash, Shelly wouldn't be here. She was orginally desinged to be a boy but Slash insisted Robotnik redo her genteic structure to be a girl with the help from Amy and Sonic's DNA. Slash is always on the lookout for Shelly. Him and Jezz have not yet encountered one another.

Mystic The Bat

Unlike her brother Mystic is a friend of Shelly's. She is constantly telling her to try a more "femine look". She tells her it will impress Jezz. Even though this annoys Shelly they remain good friends.

Statyx the Hedgehog

Statyx and Shelly have a somewhat humorous friendship. Statyx is one of the few that see Shelly as a "clown". The two often taunt each other, so much that Statyx usually puts an end to it by giving Shelly a good shock. However, in times of crisis, the two will indefinetly work together towards their goal.

Fou the Phoenix

Shelly and Fou have a humorous friendship. Fou almost always refers to Shelly by her "nickname", which is bound to get her yelling.

Elise the Hedgehog

Shelly usually finds Elise annoying, since she never seems to speak up for herself. She thinks of Elise as a kid sister, despite her being just one year younger Shelly. However, Shelly seems to, at times, show Elise kindness rather than sarcasm. She once stated that one of the only things they have in common is that they both can't stand Shadow. Shelly can be protective of Elise in dangerous situations, and vise versa.

Trivia

• Due to the fact Shelly was created from both Sonic and Amy's DNA, Sonic and Amy are, technically, her biological parents, which entrigues many fans, especially those of SonAmy. It is unclear if Sonic, Amy OR Shelly realize this yet, though Statyx tends to point it out repeatedly.
• Sonic throwing a rock at Dr. Eggman and causing his Egg Mobile to explode is a reference to the ending of Sonic CD.[3]
• Sonic and Shelly's journey together is similar to Sonic Unleashed in a few ways
  • Both needed Sonic's help to recover their memories
  • Both his sidekicks gave tutorials through the levels.
  • Both give him a farewell at the end of their game (although Shelly returned afterwards; Chip may not)

Theme Songs

Sonic Hunt - A Thousand Miles, Vanessa Carlton. The song expresses Shelly's friendship with Sonic througout the whole game, her guilt over fighting with him, and how much she will miss him after she departs for the ARK.

Sonic Hunt 2 - The Hero in Me, Emily Osment. (this theme is shared with Skyler and Lightning). This song tells of Shelly's transition to a teenage girl, and taking responsibility as leader of her newly formed team.

Sonic Heroes 2 - The Sweet Escape, Gwen Stafani (shared with Skyler and Lightning) It tells the story of Skyler and Shelly's recent 'episode' and how they will make up in the end.

Jezz of Time 2 - Ain't Nobody, Chaka Khan. The song is about both Eggman and Shelly's relation, and Jezz and Shelly's relationship.

Reception

Since Shelly's first game, she received a small, yet positive audience. Fans especially liked her theme song, A Thousand Miles. Her popularity greatly increased after her teenage upgrade in Sonic Hunt 2. Many artists have done their own artworks of her. Shelly has appeared in many fanons, all of which none has been made into actual media yet (excluding Sonic Heroes 2). Shelly's Sonic News Network blog has made her a comedy icon on the Wiki. She has become an important character in the Jezz of Time spinoff series, becoming the girlfriend of Jezz the Hedgehog. A user on the site, known as Noname the hero, commented "I have to say that Shelly the hedgehog is my favorite [character]. Also, expecting a huge reception, 3D models of Shelly the Hedgehog will be coming soon to SNN, as Shelly's creator feels she should have a 3D figure like the canon characters do.

The Story of Princess Amir

After Sonic left Camelot, a young hedgehog had wandered into the village. She had lost her parents long ago, and had just lost her home. She was desperately hungry, and had no money. She walked until she came near a cart full of bread. When she thought no one was looking, she quick stole a loaf. But the owner had saw her, and chased after her. She quick hid in a small alley, where Merlina the Sorceress was waiting for her...

She handed Merlina back the bread and introduced herself. Merlina had knowd she had seen the name "Amir" in one of her books. She took her back to the castle and in the book, they found Amir was the name of the heir to the throne! Thus, Amir was to have her coronation a week from that day.

Amir did not want to be a princess, but she had no choice. The night before the coronation, a dragon had flew into Camelot and kidnapped Amir, and now the Knights of the Round Table attempt to rescue her, but sadly fail.

Sir Tom a'Lincoln

There once was a brave knight by the name of Sir Tom a'Lincoln. He was the Sonic and the Black Knight version of Jezz the Hedgehog. He was a romantic fellow, so his nickname was "The Red Rose Knight". One day he was riding on his noble steed when he heard of the dragon who had kidnapped the fair princess, and made it his mission to find and slay the dragon, winning the favor of the lovely princess. After being rescued, Amir declared that she and Sir Tom be engaged and married when they reached the required age.

Ivory the Cat

Ivory is a white, anthropomorphic half-cat, half-vampire. She does not really have a written backstory yet.
