Sonic has fought alongside countless of allies in his many adventures. Some of them he only fought with once, others he fights with daily. But who is Sonic's best and most loyal sidekick? That's what we intend to find out! In this blog post, we'll be pitting some of Sonic's best known sidekicks against each other, to see who the community thinks is the best! Unfortunately we can't include every single sidekick, so if you think one that isn't listed should be on here, tell us in the comments!
After you're done reading, don't forget to vote on the polls and leave your opinion in the comments!
Amy in the main series is presented as being somewhat kind and sweet. In Sonic CD, she was referred to as an "optimistic tomboy" who loves fortunes and uses tarot cards. Because of her tomboyish nature, she became a playable character as a fighter in Sonic the Fighters. However, after Sonic Adventure, Amy had grown a more girly personality, such as an interest in shopping and fashion, but that didn't remove her tomboyish nature, as in the more recent games, Amy has become far more violent and aggressive, much to Sonic's dismay. She often shows her anger by pulling out her Piko Piko Hammer out of nowhere and usually threatens that she'll hit Sonic with it, which causes him to run away.
Tails is portrayed as a very kind, young fox who is humble about his abilities, and always willing to help out when he can. Tails can just about do anything if he just thinks about it and sums up all the answers correctly. He was very shy when he first met Sonic the Hedgehog, but gradually opened up and became Sonic's best friend. In Tails' Adventure, he saved an entire island from the brink of destruction caused by the Battle Kukku Army. He also battled various villains in Tails' Sky Patrol, such as the main villain, Wendy Witchcart. In Sonic Adventure, Tails saved Station Square from Doctor Eggman. Tails soon realized that he was able to be independent and support himself without Sonic's help. Even though he enjoys being Sonics sidekick, he believes that he can do almost anything, even without Sonic's support.
Cream is a princess-like figure; she is polite, just, follows manners (and never forgets them) and does what she is told. Her mother's strict, but kind discipline has made Cream very polite. She's very friendly and tries to be close to everyone she meets. She is brave as well, usually not afraid to go out on an adventure. She’s a bit naive however, and doesn’t always see things right away, since she’s still very young.
Knuckles is honest, independent, short-tempered, headstrong, devoted to his duty and somewhat gullible. He is very serious and usually likes to be by himself, but can be relied upon to help out whenever the planet needs saving. In all versions of the Sonic universe Knuckles has a rivalry in some form with Sonic. This might however sterm from the fact that he appears to be sometimes jealous of Sonic's independent nature and freedom.
Amy does possess super speed, and is faster than most others. She is on par with Tails and Blaze but has sometimes been shown to be a bit faster or slower depending on the circumstances at the time. She is one of the few common Speed Type charcaters that don't augment their speed with the use of a special object or power (i.e. Shadow uses his Hover Skates and Chaos Powers, Blaze uses her pyrokinesis, and Metal Sonic has a rocket in his back). This along with general sneakiness (numerous cutscenes) allows her to be able to catch Sonic from time to time. In many games, such as Sonic Heroes, she's usually one of the speed characters.
Like many of the other characters in the Sonic universe, Tails has super speed, and can perform the Sonic Spin, and the Spin Dash. He also has several unique attacks, such as attacking with his tails by twirling around. Most notably, he can achieve flight by spinning his two tails around like a helicopter rotor. When in flight, he can go fast enough to keep up with Sonic; making him one of the fastest characters in the series, right behind Sonic, Shadow and Metal Sonic. (Tails went as fast as Sonic, who was already moving at supersonic speed, in Sonic Colors, when he was under Eggman's mind control) He can also swim quite well, which is an ability Sonic never had. This, when combined with his flying ability, actually makes him quite an unfairly skilled character in some games.
Cream can achieve flight by flapping her two rather large ears. Although she can't fly as high, as fast or for as long as the other flying characters like Rouge or Tails can, she can fly a greater horizontal distance. She is super fast like many other Sonic characters, but she is not as fast as Sonic or Shadow. Whilst able to mimic Sonic's basic spin-attack and spin dash, she largely attacks by having her Chao, Cheese, ram her adversaries. She commands Cheese to a particular enemy or destroyable obstacles and cheese will try to cause damage to them. She also has good homemaking skills, most likely because of her mother. In some games and the show, Cream fights exceptionally than she usually does, and in Season 3 of Sonic X, she is much more technical, showing that she could manage some of the machines in the Blue Typhoon.
Knuckles possesses immense superhuman strength, so strong that he can split the hydrogen in the air by punching with a technique known as Deep Impact (In the game Sonic Battle, this move can result in an instant KO on weaker opponents). Another feat of strength is that he can punch the ground with enough force to cause fissures. Knuckles' strength is believed to be the equivalent of Sonic's speed, which would make him able to lift and press 100 metric tons, being stronger than all characters. His monstrous brute strength also enables him to perform other amazing feats such as punching holes right through thick steel, shatter boulders to smithereens and lift objects many times his own size and weight. His super strength seems to lie in his upper body, particularly in his arms and hands (or fists). He also possess near-maximized endurance; capable of taking some major punishment.
Using her tarot cards, Amy learned that she was to have a "destined" encounter with Sonic on the Little Planet. Excited, she rushed over to Never Lake, the place where the small planet appears one month out of the year. It wasn't long before she ran into her crush, Sonic, in Palmtree Panic, and couldn't help but excitedly grab onto her hero, something which was none too pleasing to him. Her happiness was short lived, for as she continued to follow Sonic into Collision Chaos, she was kidnapped by Dr. Eggman's latest creation, Metal Sonic. Though Sonic eventually rescued Amy from her capture, and saved Little Planet from Eggman's grasp, he did not reciprocate her advances. More...
Tails was first seen in Sonic 2 for the Master System, where he was kidnapped by Doctor Ivo Robotnik for ransom. He was first made playable in the Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where he played the part of Sonic's sidekick and also as a playable character from the second controller, or could be chosen as player one. He could also be played in two-player racing games in Sonic 2. More...
The first game Cream appeared in was Sonic Advance 2, where she was an unlockable character. Like Tails and Knuckles, she was kidnapped by Eggman and Sonic the Hedgehog must rescue her before she can become playable. Just before the final level, her mother is kidnapped by Eggman, who is eventually rescued in the end by Super Sonic after he destroys the final boss. More...
Knuckles lives on Angel Island, which hovers in the sky thanks to the power of the Master Emerald, which he is charged with guarding. Knuckles is the last surviving member of the Echidna people who once inhabited the island, though it is later revealed that he is not the last of his species entirely. Due to his rather remote location and the fact that he rarely strays far from his duty, Knuckles is often alone, and as thus can be quite antisocial and distrusting, but on the other side, he is often quite gullible. One example of this gullibility is the belief that he held throughout Sonic the Hedgehog 3 that Sonic and Tails were attempting to steal the Master Emerald and that the infamous mad scientist Dr. Robotnik was trying to protect it.
