Remember the rumors of a "Sonic Boom" cartoon that sprung up around the Internet over the summer? Turns out they were true.
Yesterday, SEGA Blogs announced a new television series with the working title "Sonic Boom". The show is a CG action comedy aimed at children 6-11, and will first air in fall 2014 on Cartoon Network in the US. SEGA of America and Genao Productions will co-produce the first 52 eleven-minute episodes.
The series will center on Sonic, Tails, their never-ending search for adventure, and their battles with Dr. Eggman. Knuckles and Amy, plus a rogue’s gallery of enemies–some familiar to Sonic fans and some brand-new.
If you notice the promotional image above, it seems the characters will be redesigned for the show. Knuckles is taller and has fingers; it almost doesn't look like everyone's favorite echidna (He's had fingers in the Archie Comics before, peoples). Sonic's spines are slightly different and he looks like he's wearing a jacket. Amy isn't wearing her usual dress. And Tails... is holding a wrench. No surprise there.
Soon after the announcement, a curious Facebook user asked about the series' voice actors. Sega replied:
- We are pleased and excited that many of the voice actors used in game for Sonic and friends will also be voicing the TV animation.
Is this cartoon one of the surprises Sega of America has hinted at for 2014? Is this a taste of the Sonic franchise to come? Until Sega tells us more, we can only speculate.
Speaking of which, the Sonic News Network has an entire thread for speculation about Sonic Boom. Check it out!
