So I finally have some free time on my hands, and I felt like expressing my opinion on the Wii/PS2 versions of Sonic Unleashed. As many of you know, critics seemed to despise the 360/PS3 versions of Sonic Unleashed but praised the Wii/PS2 versions. I have no idea why. I'll start off with both sides of the gameplay.
Disclaimer: This is just my personal opinion. If you prefer the Wii/PS2 version then that's fine.
360/PS3: Sonic's Gameplay in this version feels very fluent. His boost gauge isn't limited by slots (meaning you can simply hold the button down) and he moves around just find. His control can be slippery at time however, especially when you are controlling him on a platform. My main gripe with the control is that to homing attack, you press the action button instead of double tapping the jump button, which irritates me a little bit. Overall, Sonic's control if flawed, but works just fine in this version.
Wii/PS2: Wow, this is just terrible. Compared to the control in the 360/PS3 versions, it is literally garbage. Sonic is very unresponsive, which has lead to my death on numerous occasions. Also, this version's control is very gimmicky if you are using the Wiimote & Nunchuck combination. To homing attack, you need to flick the controllers down or up, which get's very annoying. But what I hate the most is that when you want to boost, you need to pump your arms up and down quickly. To continue boosting, you need to repeatedly pump your arms up and down. This get's you tired very quickly and I'm worn out after only a couple of levels.
360/PS3: I'm not going to go on a rampage on how I hate the Werehog, but I will just say the important things about his levels. The levels can be incredibly long, sometimes stretching to 20 minutes, and the enemies are very repetitive. However, there are many combo moves you can use in this version, so at least there are many ways to defeat the bland enemies.
Wii/PS2: I will say that I prefer the Werehog in this version. His levels don't stretch out nearly as long, and I must say it is quite satisfying to use the Wiimote & Nunchuck to take out foes. Other than this, there really are no other improvements.
360/PS3: Due to the HD Power of the 360 & PS3, Sonic Unleashed is a very gorgeous looking game. Each area has it's own distinct feel and the cartoonish look is very splendid indeed. When in motion, it really makes you feel like your going extremely fast. I do prefer Sonic Colours & Sonic Generation's environments but I do think this is a beautiful game.
Wii/PS2: I'm not going to compare the graphics from the HD versions to the Wii/PS2 as I know they are not technically capable of pulling them off. But this version only looks 'OK' at best. The Hub-Worlds are downright terrible. Where are the beautiful, open hub-world's of the 360/PS3 versions. Some levels look quite nice, with Adabat being my favorite, but other places such as Spagonia look like they are still in a beta release.
360/PS3 Although I will never go back to play as the Werehog, I still get a kick out of Sonic's stages. I go back to them every now and again and never regret it.
Wii/PS2 None. There just isn't anything. Unless you like concept art, there just isn't anything to bring you back.
I hope this blog post can make you can see why I prefer the 360/PS3 versions of Sonic Unleashed over the Wii/PS2 versions. If you have any questions, just ask!
