This guy's Violet Void power kind of floats you around... And pulls other stuff in towards him.

Tails, Sonic Colors (Nintendo DS)

The Violet Void (バイオレット・ヴォイド Baioretto vu~oido?) is a transformation used by Sonic the Hedgehog in the DS version of Sonic Colors. It is the Color Power Sonic gains when absorbing a Violet Wisp and its Hyper-go-on. While in this form, Sonic turns into a ghost-like void that sucks up anything in its path.

Appearance

As the Violet Void, Sonic's entire body turns into a ghastly floating black orb made of smoke, with violet outlines, which is arguably not much larger than Sonic's full height. On the side of the Violet Void, Sonic's eyes and mouth can be seen, though his eyes have lost their pupils and have turned yellow, and his mouth has become a wide sinister smile with serrated sharp teeth and glows yellow.

Powers and Abilities

As the Violet Void, Sonic essentially becomes a living black hole, granting him the ability to draw objects into himself from a distance and seemingly making them vanish into a void within himself that destroys them. However, if the object in question is too big or too heavy, Sonic cannot draw it into him.

Due to his body being made of a smoke-like substance, Sonic is granted limited intangibility, allowing him to pass through certain obstacles such as moving fans unharmed. As the Violet Void, Sonic is also capable of flight, allowing him to move through mid-air.

Like the Purple Frenzy, Sonic is, as the Violet Void, able to add the mass of the objects he draws into himself to his own, allowing Sonic to grow larger the more he consumes, until he reaches the maximum size for the Violet Void, which is about three times the form's original size. The more Sonic increases in size as the Violet Void, the stronger his suction ability will become, allowing Sonic to draw in bigger and heavier objects from increasingly greater distances. At maximum size of the Violet Void, Sonic can even draw in objects weighting at least a ton and enemies at the size of the Frigate Skullian.

The Violet Void's only known weakness is that this form can only be maintained for a few movements before Sonic will revert back to normal, and requires more Hyper-go-on from Violet Wisps to be maintained.

Gameplay

In the DS version of Sonic Colors, the Violet Void is the last Color Power introduced in the game, and is unlocked in Asteroid Coaster. The player can only use the Violet Void while Sonic is in possession of a Violet Wisp. Transforming into the Violet Void will cause the Boost Gauge to start depleting, and once it runs out, Sonic will revert back to normal.

As the Violet Void, any enemies that may be encountered by the player, or obstacles blocking the player's path, will be drawn into the player, either from a distance or by physical touch in some cases, and are instantly destroyed. After consuming a few enemies/obstacles with the Violet Void, the player will grow one size, and will do so again after consuming more objects. The Violet Void can have up to two growth spurts before it reaches maximum size. The bigger the Violet Void is, the larger the player's intake radius as the Violet Void will be, and the faster he/she can move.

Certain obstacles, usually of greater size and weight, requires that the Violet Void has reached a certain size before it can be swallowed. The Violet Void are likewise able to draw in Rings and Wisp Capsules from a distance A specific block-shaped gimmick in the Acts can also provide the player with additional matter for the purpose of increasing the Violet Void's size.

While as the Violet Void, the player is invulnerable to damage, be it from the environment or enemies. This means that the player cannot lose Rings or lives due to taking damage when as the Violet, allowing the player to move over obstacles such as spikes, without taking damage. The player can, however, still lose a life when moving into bottomless pits.

While turned into the Violet Void, the player can take alternate paths and shortcut throughout the Act by passing through rotating fans that would otherwise block the player's advances. When passing through these fans, the player is briefly turned into smoke and is given a boost of speed in the direction the fan is facing. These fans can likewise be used to direct the player down a certain path in midair, by sending the player towards a new fan with a previous fan that the player passed through beforehand.

The Violet is activated by the player by pressing the X button, while the player's directions are controlled by control pad. While as the Violet Void, the player can move in all direction, as the Violet Void is capable of automatic flight.

Jingles

Trivia

  • The Violet Void can be used to slowly eat away at the Frigate Skullian. If its health is depleted while in Void form, it will be sucked in.
  • The Violet Void and the Yellow Drill are the only Color Powers that have multiple jingles. The Yellow Drill's jingles are heard in Sweet Mountain and Aquarium Park, and the Violet Void's jingles are heard during Act 1, Act 2, and the missions of Sweet Mountain and Asteroid Coaster, and during the boss fight against Frigate Skullian.
    • However, this is the only color power to have different jingles in the DS version since the Yellow Drill jingles are the same in that version.
      • The Violet Void's jingles are actually slower distortions of the background music.
  • In the upcoming video game, Sonic Lost World, a new Color Power know as the Indigo Asteroid, has abilities very similar to the Violet Void. Similarly, the Black Wisps from Sonic Lost World have a similar Color Power (known as the Black Bomb) which has some comparisons to the Violet Void.
  • In the opening, the Violet Void is shown to have rather white eyes and mouth whilst, in the levels, it is shown to have a yellow mouth and yellow eyes instead.
