The Wall Shuffle[1] is a technique performed by Sonic the Hedgehog. First appearing in Sonic and the Secret Rings, this move allows the player to move Sonic along a narrow ledge in order to continue through the level.

Description

The Wall Shuffle is a move only used on certain occasions. Typically, if the player, who controls Sonic the Hedgehog, runs to a wall ledge, the Wall Shuffle will activate. To control the Wall Shuffle technique, the player must tilt the Wii Remote control whilst being sideways (Sonic and the Secret Rings), move the analog stick (Sonic Unleashed) or move the Nunchuk analog stick left or right (Sonic and the Black Knight).

Obstacles will also be in the way to harm the player as he/she are performing the Wall Shuffle. Spikes, and wall ledges that eventually fall down to Bottomless pits can get in the player's way. In Sonic and the Secret Rings, if the player uses the Slide technique, he/she can potentially avoid all obstacles on the wall ledge, as long as the slide power was quick and powerful. If the player happens to lose control while walking on the ledge, shake the Wii Remote to get back up. The player must be careful though; if he/she gets back up right after they were hit by spikes and if the spikes hit the player again, the player will fall down to a bottomless pit.

Quotation1 There will be moments where Sonic must move along the ledge with his back against the wall. In this situation, tilt down the right end or left end of the Wii Remote to shuffle him in either directions. Quotation2
Manual, Sonic and the Secret Rings[2]

The Wall Shuffle first appeared in Sonic and the Secret Rings. The Wall Shuffle is used at least once in all of the levels in Sonic and the Secret Rings. If the player uses the Slide ability when using the Wall Shuffle, the player skirts through the entire Wall Shuffle segments in a breeze. However, areas such as the Sand Oasis Wall Shuffle segments, can be avoided, but it requires enough skill and timing, due to said level having Wall Shuffle segments while running upward on a building.

The Wall Shuffle would later appear in Sonic Unleashed as a move for Sonic the Werehog during the nighttime stages of the game. Sonic must perform the Wall Shuffle at least once in all of the levels in the Playstation 2/Wii version of Sonic Unleashed.

Sonic and the Black Knight

Quotation1 There are situations where Sonic must move along the ledge with his back against the wall. Tilt the Control Stick left of right to safely cross the narrow path. Quotation2
Manual, Sonic and the Black Knight[4]

The Wall Shuffle reappears in Sonic and the Black Knight. In this game, however, there are only a few segments where Wall Shuffle can be used within the entire game, as the gameplay is more focused on the running while sword-slashing gameplay. The only level featuring the Wall Shuffle is the Molten Mine stage, where the Wall Shuffle controls are primarily the same with the exclusion of Sonic using Caliburn to destroy wooden crates.
