The Warp Hole[2][1] (ワープホール[3] Wāpu Hōru?), also known as the Warp Gate,[4] is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a portal for space transportation that lets the player move to different locations.

Description[]

Like their name implies, the Warp Holes can transport those that enter them from one location to another. They are presented as swirling portals of energy that float in midair.

In gameplay, touching a Warp Hole will instantly teleport the player to another section of the level, which can either serve as a shortcut or the only possible means of getting to said location. However, they cannot usually be used to go back to the location the player was at before.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Adventure 2[]

In Sonic Adventure 2 and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Warp Holes can only be found at certain Ancient Ruins which must be activated using the Mystic Melody. This will make the Warp Hole appear above the Ancient Ruin. In this game, it resembles a white ball of light. The Warp Hole works both ways, meaning the player can go through it to new locations and back to their Ancient Ruin.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Warp Holes are colored yellow. Here, they are used by Shadow and are either needed to complete the stage they are featured in or used as shortcuts. They can be found in Black Comet, Death Ruins, Digital Circuit, Mad Matrix, Space Gadget, and The Last Way, some of them which are hidden behind locked doors.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the color of Warp Hole is blue and they can be encountered in both Action Stages and Town Missions. In Action Stages, the Warp Holes can only be found in Shadow's version of White Acropolis, in Town Missions and very hard mode. They can also be encountered in missions such as Town Mission 18: The Test of Intelligence and Town Mission 20: The Test of Love.

Unlike in Shadow the Hedgehog, Warp Holes in Town Missions will teleport the player directly to the exit area without waiting for the game to load, unlike in Action Stages.

Sonic Rivals series[]

Sonic Rivals[]

In Sonic Rivals, the Warp Holes resemble spheres of purple wind streams. In this game, they only appear in Meteor Base Zone. They are used for the same manner of transportation as in Sonic Adventure 2. They also appear in the Egg Destroyer Boss Act though it is only used by the player's rival to reach the next section of the boss fight after the player attacks the turrets to progress to the next section of the boss fight in which case the rival is teleported to the same section the player is in.

Sonic Rivals 2[]

In Sonic Rivals 2, the Warp Holes are green holes resembling spheres of wind streams, although they are hard to perceive. They only appear in Mystic Haunt Zone where they are used for instant teleportation as in previous games.
