Wisp Capsules[1] are recurring objects in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are floating capsules created by Dr. Eggman for holding Wisps.

Wisp Capsules are differently-sized capsules for imprisoning Wisps, which always float in one place. Regular Wisp Capsules have a red-colored chassis at the bottom with a transparent top cover. Each Wisp Capsule contain only one specific type of Wisp within it. Usually, Wisp Capsules only hold one Wisp each, although there are exceptions.

To open a Wisp Capsule in gameplay, the player simply has to touch it. The player will then automatically obtain its Wisp. Also, after opening a Wisp Capsule, another one with the same type of Wish in it will soon after appear in the same spot.

In both versions of Sonic Colors, Wisp Capsules can be found in each Act. For most types of Wisps, Wisp Capsules only hold one Wisp each. For White Wisps, however, the Wisp Capsules can hold about four or five of them.

Wisp Capsules for Wisps that the player has yet to encounter will be empty, transparent and cannot be interacted with. Also, these Wisp Capsules have a certain color shade that signifies which Wisp it is supposed to contain.

While numerous Acts in the game ends with a Goal Ring, there are some that have a giant Wisp Capsule, called the Prison Capsule,[2] instead. These capsules are placed on the ground and contain numerous White Wisps in two long tubes. The Prison Capsules act as Goals that, once opened, means the player has cleared the Act, much like Capsules.

Sonic Generations

Wisp Capsules made an appearance in both versions of Sonic Generations. In this game, the Wisp Capsules are more detailed than in Sonic Colors, with a yellow eye having been added on the middle, similar to ones on the Prison Capsules in Sonic Colors.

In the console/PC versions, Wisp Capsules appear in Planet Wisp, and on the Nintendo 3DS version, they appear in Tropical Resort and can be acquired through a Homing Attack. In both versions, the Wisp Capsules only containing one type of Wisp for each Act.

Sonic Forces

In Sonic Forces, Wisp Capsules containing White Wisps can be used to fill Modern Sonic and Shadow the Hedgehog's Boost gauge. Wisp Capsules containing one of any other type of Wisp allow the Avatar to briefly use their Wispon's movement ability when acquired.

  • If Sonic is using a specific Color Power, say, Pink Spikes, and collects a Wisp Capsule containing a Pink Wisp, then the Wisp Gauge will be replenished. But if he collects any other color Wisp besides the color he is currently using, then he cannot use that Color Power until he is finished with the Pink Spikes.
  • While Wisps make reappearance in Sonic Lost World and Sonic Runners, all Wisp Capsules are replaced with Item Boxes, which contain Wisps and other traditional items. After releasing the Wisp from Item Box, the player can activate the Color Power.
